Prime Lamb Challenge

The Ouyen Livestock Exchange Prime Lamb Challenge is held at the Ouyen Farmer's Festival annually on Melbourne Cup Day.

Division and weight categories in pens of three are:

  1. Lambs out of Merino Ewes below 50kg
  2. Lambs out of Merino Ewes 50kg and above
  3. Lambs out of Crossbred Ewes below 50kg
  4. Lambs out of Crossbred Ewes 50kg and above

 

The competition is organised with the intention of highlighting the various breeding techniques which contribute to producing Prime Lambs.

 

Five main points- fat score, length and depth, back structure (rump), cleanness of points, skin and lamb presentation- will be scored in the assessment.

 

Prizes include the James Alexander Cattanach Memorial Trophy, industry products and Ram Vouchers.

 

Entry fee is $3 per pen of 3 lambs.

 

Lambs must be bare shorn or up to eight weeks off shears.
